    因地震、山崩、滑坡、泥石流、冰碛或火山喷发的熔岩和碎屑物堵塞河流而形成的湖泊。这些突然堵塞河流的熔岩或碎屑物往往可以产生河流上游涌水,致使上游城镇、土地遭到淹埋;当堵塞河段的堤坝溃决,则使下游的村镇、土地荡然无存,造成重大的经济损失。高寒地区稳定的堰塞湖可以作为区域的水源地。研究堰塞湖的发育,可以查清古、今区域灾害发生的性质、特点与频率,也可以进一步研究区域气候与环境演化的规律。
