同翅目的 1科。中型。体略呈卵形，背面相当隆起。前胸背板大,但不盖住中胸小盾片。前翅革质,常盖住腹部。爪片上 2脉纹通常分离。后翅径脉近端部分叉。后足胫节背面有2侧刺，端部有2列端刺；第1、2跗节上也有端刺。幼虫腹部能分泌胶液，形成泡沫，盖住身体保护自己。本科昆虫通称沫蝉。又叫吹沫虫或吹泡虫。多数为害木本植物，重要的种类如稻黑沫蝉为害水稻。
