“奇异吸引子”概念建立在实值函数迭代的基础上,将一个初始值代入某种关系,所得结果再回授到那种基本关系之中,如此反复进行下去,只要具备某种条件的限制或约束,最终的迭代结果均可吸引到某一点,即奇异吸引子。由于该点具有吸引性,故亦称稳定固点。作为一个非平衡的、开放的地理系统,当外部环境干扰增加到一定程度时,系统内部即出现混乱(无序)现象,地理奇异吸引子企图从数学上去描述此种过程。它是地理系统如何从有序走向混沌的一种理论说明。国际地理界已有不少理论地理学家在探索它在地理学中的特殊表现形式。
