粘土岩 clay rock 主要由粘土矿物组成的沉积岩。矿物颗粒细小,一般小于0.0039毫米。矿物成分主要为粘土矿物(如高岭石、水云母、蒙脱石等),其含量通常大于 50%,其次为碎屑矿物(如石英、长石等)、非粘土自生矿物(如铁、铝的氧化物、氢氧化物等)、碳酸盐矿物(如方解石、白云石等)以及磷酸盐、硫酸盐矿物等。具泥状、砂泥状、粉砂泥状结构和层纹、干裂和结核构造。常见类型有残积型粘土岩、疏松粘土岩、高岭石粘土岩、蒙脱石粘土岩、水云母粘土岩等。通常称疏松者为粘土、固结者为泥岩或页岩。粘土岩具有可塑性、耐火性、烧结性、吸水性和离子交换等性能,故在工业上用途广泛。
