A local variety of Canna edulis Ker was imported from Binyan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to plant in the barren see sand land of the campus of Hainan University, located at the northern tip of Hainan Island, and a preliminary success was obtained.

蕉芋(edible canna)

美人蕉科(Cannaceae)美人蕉属中的栽培种,多年生草本植物。学名Canna edulis Ker.,别名蕉藕、姜芋。染色体数2n=2x=18,3x=27。可炒食、腌渍,还可加工制淀粉和粉丝。每100g块茎中含淀粉12-14g。茎叶可作饲料和造纸原料。蕉芋也是观赏植物。原产南美洲安第斯山脉海拔2800m处,委内瑞拉和智利尚有野生种。公元前2500年在哥伦比亚驯化,1570年欧洲已有栽培,1821年传入日本,1948年引入中国,福建、江西、浙江等省有零星种植。植株高2m,易分蘖。茎直立、粗壮,淡紫红色。叶椭圆形,长40-50cm,宽20-30cm,绿色,背部紫色。总状花序,花红色。块茎有节,皮黄色,肉白色,每株可着生块茎30个左右。生长势旺盛,适应性强。喜高温,较耐旱,怕涝。用块茎繁殖,14℃以上出苗。茎、叶长生最适温度为30℃,块茎膨大期以11-25℃为宜。要求土层深厚,多用高畦栽培。春季月平均气温10℃以上时播种,每亩1000-1200穴。多施基肥,生长期间追肥并培土2-3次。冬季采收块茎。
