九龙江平原地肥沃，气候炎热，雨水充足，不仅是越南著名的大粮仓，也是著名的大果园、大渔场。在这里不管到哪一个省，你都会切实感受到她的富饶和美丽。
从17世纪中期到19世纪中期，是九龙江平原早期的开发时期，许多外地移民开始在这里开荒，兴修水利，种植水稻和杂粮饲养家畜，捕捞水产。从同奈一嘉定地区开始，逐步形成了一个繁华富庶的集镇。从1802年到1805年，阮氏朝廷共颁布25项决定，大力发展开荒。到1868年，包括九龙江平原在内的南部地区所开发的种植面积达到29.555万公顷，接近于整个自然面积的5％。 20世纪前30年，九龙江平原的耕地面积迅速增长，加之兴修水利、出口大米等使其面貌发生了急剧的变化。到1929年，九龙江平原有2500公里长的大大小小灌溉渠道，耕地面积达到二万公顷，相当于19世纪中叶的10倍，大米出口达到17o万吨，占印度支那出口总额的80％，相当于1860年大米出口量的30倍。
