武汉盘龙城经济开发区原名为武汉市黄陂滠口经济发展区，成立于1992年12月（武政[1992]70号），原辖区为滠口镇，国土范围157.5平方公里，1993年，黄陂县成立滠口经济发展区管理委员会，属县人民政府派出机构。2000年4月，黄陂县改区后，划出42平方公里（含刘店、下集、叶店、许庙、刘古塘五个村）交发展区管委会封闭托管。2003年5月，经市开发区管理办公室同意（武开发区办[2003]5号），更名为武汉盘龙城经济开发区，履行职能不变。同年9月，区人民政府将岱黄高速公路以西另外7个村（后湖、刘集、丁店、三店、丰山、龙王庙、黄花涝）划入开发区托管。目前，开发区行政托管88平方公里，常住人口3.4万人。2005年，全国开发区清理整顿中，经省人民政府批准保留盘龙城开发区，确定规划建设面积为18.8平方公里，到2005年末，建成区面积6平方公里。
