藓纲真藓亚纲光藓目光藓科光藓属的唯一种，并由此建立了光藓科和光藓目。分布于日本的本州以北地区、欧洲和北美，在中国尚未发现。
在形态上，光藓具有独特长存的原丝体，对光线有折光性。叶2列,基部长下延而在基部相互融合呈蕨类叶片状；叶细胞长菱形，薄壁，内含多个叶绿体。孢蒴小球状，无蒴齿（见图）。
其着生生境主要为山地洞穴，也见于岩缝和倒木根上。
光藓目的系统位置现被认为介于葫芦藓目和真藓目之间。
