海参纲楯手目海参科的1属。体形大,长20～30厘米。口大，偏于腹面，具楯形触手20～30个，通常为20或25个。背面有分散的疣足,腹面有排列为3纵带的管足。最重要的特征是肛门周围有 5个钙质肛门齿，故名"辐肛参"。体壁厚而坚实。石灰环发达，辐片 2倍于间辐片。皮肤内骨片为繁简不同的分枝杆状体，复杂的杆状体则变成花纹样体，没有桌形体和扣状体。
辐肛参在热带珊瑚礁内常见，多生活在珊瑚礁底下或躲在瑚珊礁缝隙内，有的生活在波浪剧烈冲刷的死珊瑚上。所有辐肛参均可食，肉质很厚，为上等参，商品价值很高。西印度的阿氏辐肛参具有抗癌活性物质。
世界约有10种辐肛参,绝大多数分布印度-西太平洋区，西印度只有阿氏辐肛参1种。中国南海产有4种：白底辐肛参、辐肛参、棘辐肛参和乌绉辐肛参，均为食用种。
