长城及沿线城障修燧汉长城西起甘肃敦煌县玉门关以西，沿疏勒河南岸，经湾窑墩，天桥墩，吐火洛，后进入安息县北湖。再向东到金塔县境内，接居延塞，沿额济纳河迤题北上；曲折蜿蜒，气势磅礴。另一走向从金塔，高台，张掖，山丹，永昌，民勤，武威，古浪，永登等县，过黄河东去。城垣虽经两千多年风沙侵蚀，但有些地段至今仍坚固完整，屹立于戈壁中；玉门关附近城垣保存较好。结构为就地取材，以芦苇，红柳，胡杨和罗布麻等夹砂砾石层层夯筑。城垣最高处4米左右。芦苇等层厚5厘米，砂砾层厚20厘米，粘结非常牢固，可谓我国古代独创的“混凝土”。长城内侧高峻处，风燧土台相望。土台以黄土为基，上部用土坯垒砌，高者达10米。台旁墙坞内有戍卒所居小舍，备弓弩刀剑，石块等防御武器。烽顶小室为戍卒日夜警戒执勤的岗位，如发现敌情，相互报警。据说狼粪燔烟最大，使远处易见，故土台俗称狼烟墩，又名烽火台。
