按一定方式将广大地区的地图划分成尺寸适宜的若干单幅地图，以便于地图制作和使用。分幅形式有：①矩形分幅。图廓呈矩形，相邻图幅以直线划分。矩形大小多由纸张和印刷机的规格（全开、对开、4开、8开等）而定。优点是各图幅间接合紧密，便于拼接使用，各图幅印刷面积可相对平衡，利于充分利用纸张和印刷机的版面。缺点是图廓线没有明确的地理坐标，整个制图区域只能一次投影，常用于局部地区的大比例尺平面图和中小比例尺挂图和地图集；②经纬分幅。地图的内图廓近似梯形，常用于基本比例尺地形图。地图分幅时要顾及用图要求、纸张幅面和印刷条件。中国7种基本比例尺地形图均按经纬线分幅，以1∶100万地图为基础，按规定的经差和纬差划分图幅，因经线的收敛，各图幅尺寸不同。
