龟蟾科分布于大洋洲，是细趾蟾在大洋洲对应的成员，也有人将其归入细趾蟾科。龟蟾科有大约20属100种左右，和细趾蟾科一样，既包括一些似蛙的成员，也包括一些似蟾蜍的成员，还有不少穴居的种类以适应澳洲干旱的气候，但是缺少树栖的成员。龟蟾科最奇特的成员是胃育溪蟾Rheobatrchussilus，这种二十世纪年代才被发现的新种将卵放在雌蟾的胃中孵化，最后将小蟾从口中吐出。更奇怪的是，胃育溪蟾在二十世纪八十年代突然消失了，离其被发现仅十余年时间，它们的灭绝原因现在还不得而知，成为不解之谜。
