| 小鲵科 Hynobiidae 有尾目的一科。全变态（个别种有童体型），多数有肺（仅爪鲵属无肺），体外受精。现有8属30余种，主要分布于亚洲东部北纬27°以北地区，西至乌拉尔山和伊朗北部，北达北极圈南缘。该科除1属1种外，其他7属约90％的种集中分布于东亚大陆及其邻近岛屿。中国已知7属15种，多为特有种。 小鲵属四肢较发达，指4，趾5或4；皮肤光滑无疣粒。头部扁平呈卵圆形；躯干圆柱状，略扁，体侧有肋沟；有肺；尾基较圆，向后逐渐侧扁。仅见于亚洲东部，有20余种，分布于中国、朝鲜和日本。日本种类最多，中国有4种，分布于东北、华中和台湾省。陆栖为主的小鲵、拟小鲵、极北鲵、爪鲵主要生活于海拔120～1800米林间潮湿的草丛、洞穴中；繁殖季节进入溪流内石下或植物枝叶间配对产卵；繁殖期以后营陆栖生活；以多种昆虫、蠕虫、蚯蚓、蛞蝓、多足类等小型动物为食。水栖为主的肥鲵、北鲵、山溪鲵、副趾鲵多栖于海拔1000～4400米水质清澈的寒冷山溪内，繁殖期以后仍在水中或短时间上岸到潮湿环境内栖息，不远离水源；以水生小动物（虾类、昆虫及幼虫、蛞蝓）为食；尾甚侧偏，适应于在水中摄食和游泳。小鲵是有尾目中比较原始的类群。小鲵科的某些属种可以药用。
