双子叶植物，隶属毛莨目(Ranunculales)。约50属，2000种，全球分布，多见于北温带和寒带。中国40属，736种，分布全国各地。本科中的芍药属(Paeonia)常被分立为芍药科(Paeoniaceae)，隶属第伦桃目(Dilleniales)。
一年生或多年生草本，陆生，有时水生，少灌木或木质藤本。单叶，掌状裂，或为复叶，通常互生或基生，少对生。无托叶。气孔器无规则型。花两性。花瓣有或无，或特化为有蜜腺囊的花瓣状。雄蕊通常多数，离生，螺旋排列，有时有退化雄蕊，花药纵裂。胚珠多数，倒生或横生。胚乳核型。果，瘦果，少浆果或蒴果。种子有胚乳。染色体x=6-10,13。
毛莨科植物含有多种生物碱，多为药用和有毒植物。药用如黄连，乌头子根的附子，牡丹根皮的丹皮，芍药根的白芍等。牡丹和芍药又为著名的观赏植物。
