投资基金按组织形式，可分为契约型基金和公司型基金；按基金受益凭证可否赎回和买卖方式，则分为开放式基金和封闭式基金。我国投资基金起步于１９９１年，当时只有深圳“南山风险投资基金”和“武汉证券投资基金”两家，规模为９０００万元。1992年，随着海南“富岛基金”、深圳“天骥基金”、淄博“乡镇企业投资基金”等３７家基金的成立，我国投资基金规模开始扩大，到1994底，我国投资基金共有７３家，其中有３１家基金在沪、深两地证交所以及一些区域性证券交易中心挂牌成为上市基金。
