There are five categories of relations between the meaning of pictophonetic character and that of phonetic sign.
形声字与声符的意义关系大致有五种:第一种,形声字与声符在意义上完全重合;第二种,形声字表达了声符的引申义;第三种,是第二种情况中的声符被一个同音字所替换,从表面上看来,形声字与声符在意义上没有关系;第四种,形声字的意义里面蕴含着声符以其语音所表达的这个形声字的语源义,声符具有示源功能;第五种,形声字与声符在意义上没有关系。

| 声符 汉字形声字的表音部分。又称声旁。例如芬、氛、纷、汾、粉、份、忿等字都从分得声，“分”就是这些字的声符。声符跟字的读音在最初造字的时候可能是相同或相近的，但是经过时间长了，字音或声符的读音就变了，就产生了差异。就现在的读音来看，声符跟字音不同有3种情形：①声母不同，如赴(fù)从卜（bǔ）。②韵母不同，如废（ fèI ）从发（fā）。③声母韵母都不同，如移（  ）从多（duō）。这些不同都牵涉到古今音异的问题。汉字在历史发展过程中有些形声字产生了异体字，意符相同，而声符不同，如澱：淀、鎚：锤。现在一般应用后面的一个字，前而一个字很少用了。 |
