描述LithospermumL.紫草属，紫草科，约60种，分布于温带地区，我国有4种，产西南至西北、华北、东北，其中紫草L.erythrorhizonSieb.etZucc.的根供染料用。一年生或多年生草本或亚灌木；叶互生，全缘；花白色、黄色或青紫色，组成穗状花序或总状花序；萼通常分裂，裂片5，线形；花冠管状或高脚碟状，裂片5，覆瓦状排列，喉部有时有附属体或有毛；雄蕊5。内藏，花丝短，花药长圆形，药隔有时伸出成一短尖头；子房4裂，胚珠4颗；小坚果4，平滑或有小疣体。
