新丰江地处东江中游右岸，发源于粤北新丰玉田，流至河源汇入东江，流域面积5813平方公里，河长163公里。位于亚婆山峡谷的新丰江水库，建于1958年，为华南最大水库。库区湖区总面积1600平方公里，其中森林覆盖面积 1100平方公里。万绿湖位于新丰江水库，湖区群山活跃着 140多种珍稀的飞禽、两栖类和爬行动物，湖里有70多种鱼类，湖区内保持着良好的生态平衡，有"植物王国"和"动物乐园"之称。这里有北回归线上广东最大也是世界少有的常绿阔叶林。
