小兴凯湖长50公里，宽约30公里，面积140平方公里，与兴凯湖之间本来有一水道穿过沙岗相通，洪水时期小湖的水流入大湖，枯水期大湖的水注入小湖。现今在涨水期，两个湖仍然可以相通。
