| 流星 meteor 闯入大气的流星体，因与大气分子发生剧烈的碰撞和摩擦而产生明亮的光辉和余迹。一般出现于离地面80～120千米的高空，绝大多数流星相对地球的速度在11～72千米／秒，巨大的动能使它们远在到达低层大气之前就已被烧毁、气化，只有少数原来质量很大的流星才有可能有残骸落地而成为陨星。由射电观测得知，白天同样有万千流星下落，但总的说来，0～12时的流星多于12～24时，秋季多于春季。估计现在每年降落于地的流星物质有20万吨。中国古代有丰富的流星观测记录，最早的史料可追溯到鲁庄公七年(公元前687)。流星研究可提供地球高层大气的有关资料，还可利用余迹进行绝密的无线电通信。
