棕囊藻有毒,系金藻门,定鞭藻类,在我国南部海域曾多次引发赤潮.该藻球形群体外围具有一层柔软的胶质被且藻体含多糖,当大量繁殖形成赤潮时,含胶质和糖的藻体便紧紧贴在鱼鳃上,影响鱼的呼吸和摄食,致使鱼类窒息,缺氧而死亡;其次,该藻巨大的生物量(尤其是黎明和傍晚时)可造成水体缺氧导致灾害.再加上藻体和藻细胞死亡腐烂后会产生溶血毒素等有毒物质,对水体环境的破坏将持续一定时间,严重时会导致鱼类大面积死亡,尤其对网箱养殖和对虾育苗危害更大.
