羊膜卵指具有羊膜结构的卵。是爬行类、鸟类、卵生哺乳动物所产的卵。羊膜卵的特点是，在胚胎发育过程中，发生三层胚膜包围胚胎：外层称绒毛膜，内层称羊膜，另有尿囊膜。羊膜腔中充满着液体，称羊水，胚胎浸在羊水中而得到保护，免于干燥和各种机械损伤。尿囊位于羊膜和绒毛膜中间的空腔中，胚胎所产生的代射废物排到此囊中。尿囊上面有毛细血管，可以通过多孔的卵膜或卵壳与外界进行气体交换，是胚胎的呼吸器官。羊膜卵的出现，使动物能够在陆地上孵化，而不像两栖动物那样，生殖时还必须回到水中。爬行动物是最先出现羊膜卵的，羊膜卵的出现是脊椎动物进化史上的一个飞跃，使陆生脊椎动物在个体发育中完全摆脱了对水的依赖，为登陆的动物征服陆地向各种不同的栖居地纵深分布提供了机会。
