比拉彗星是由奥地利业余天文爱好者比拉（WilheimVonBiela）在1826年发现的一颗因自身分裂而走完生命旅程的短周期彗星。
它的周期为6.6年。它在1845年的回归时，突然分裂成两颗，分裂后的两颗彗星各自有彗核和彗发，它们像一对孪生兄弟，相互依偎，结伴而行，但是它们之间的距离在慢慢增大。
1865年回归时，虽然天文学家们精确预报了它的位置，但却没有找到它的踪迹，并且从此杳无音讯，给天文学家留下了许多不解和遗憾。
但在1872年11月27日，当地球穿过比拉彗星原来的轨道时，夜空中突然出现了壮丽的流星雨，灿烂的流星像雨点一样从仙女座中的一点向四下散开，这美丽而令人惊奇的景象一直持续了4个多小时，流星一直不断而且盛况空前，最多时一小时有好几万颗，总共估计达十六万颗，这就是著名的仙女座流星雨。
原来，比拉彗星在人们观测到分裂以前就已经开始碎裂了。时至今日，每年11月还能看到仙女座流星雨，只是微弱多了。
