叶甲科跳甲亚科的1种,俗称土跳蚤,菜蚤子。体小而善跳,是中国南北各地十字花科蔬菜以及甜菜的一种严重害虫。成虫食叶,幼虫食根,特别在幼苗期为害甚烈,常造成毁种,并可传播白菜腐烂病。成虫体长仅1.8~2.4毫米,长卵形而扁平。黑色光亮,触角基部3节,各足跗节深棕色,鞘翅中央有一黄色纵条,约占翅面宽度的1/3,其外缘中部向内凹曲,内缘中部直形。头顶前端具深刻点,前胸背板皮纹状,刻点散乱。鞘翅刻点略呈纵行趋势。1年发生3~6代。成虫寿命数月至1年。可连续产卵,卵产于菜苗附近土中。幼虫孵化后,沿细根食向主根,形成烂斑枯萎。6~8月发生最盛,天旱少雨则更严重。成虫越冬(见图)。
菜跳甲属中国已知近20种。有两种色型,一种鞘翅具黄条,一种无黄条。在黄条型中,除黄曲条菜跳甲外,还有黄狭条菜跳甲、黄宽条菜跳甲和黄直条菜跳甲,都是蔬菜的大害虫。前两种在华北很普遍,后一种限于华东和华南。
