鳞翅目的1科。体型较大，前翅大而狭长,翅顶角尖，具翅缰和翅缰钩,触角粗厚,端部成钩的蛾类。本科昆虫通称天蛾。世界性分布，主要在热带。全世界已知1000余种，中国已知约150种。喙发达，非一般蛾类可比,飞翔力强，经常飞翔于花丛间取蜜。大多数种类夜间活动，少数日间活动。幼虫肥大，圆柱形，光滑，体面多颗粒。第8腹节背中部有一臀角，入土后作土茧化蛹，蛹的第5节和第6节能活动，末节有臀棘。蛹喙显著,有离体与贴体之别。成虫能发微声，幼虫也能以上颚摩擦作声。
