全书十八卷共八十一个问题，分为九类，每类九个问题。主要内容：（1）大衍类（一次同余式组解法）；
（2）天时类（历法计算和降水量）；（3）田域类（土地面积）；（4）测望类（勾股，差重）；（5）赋役
类（均输，税收）；（6）钱谷类（粮谷运转，仓窖容积）；（7）营建类（建筑，施工）；（8）军旅类（营盘布置，军需供应）；（9）市易类（交易，利息）。
其中大衍求一术（一次同余的解法）和正负开方术（高次方程的解法）在世界数学史上有着崇高的地位。
