青年依据一定的社会标准对自我、社会及其相互间的价值变量关系作出功利性评判与选择的过程和趋向。它是青年价值观的动态发展。其特点是：①一种见之于社会并受制于社会因素的主观思维过程。它与一定社会的经济、政治、文化状态相适应，并反映一定社会的价值观念。在不同的社会形态和社会制度中，青年的价值取向有着不同的内容和表现方式。②总体上反映青年对自我、社会及其相互间的价值变量关系的倾向性。它既受主体需求指向的支配，是对于主体需求的一种内在的抽象性评判、选择；又受着社会需求指向的制约，是对社会需求的主体性的评判、选择。③是一个开放的系统。导向青年价值取向演变的社会因素很多，社会因素的变化常常导致青年价值取向的曲线变化。④由于青年人富于理想、幻想,求知求新意识强烈,容易接受新思想、新事物，其价值取向常常对社会具有超前意义。
