白起（？～前257）

    中国战国后期军事家。又称公孙起。郿（今陕西眉县东）人。初为秦左庶长，由相国魏冉举荐，任主将攻韩、魏，旋升左更。周赧王二十二年（前 293 ）伊阙之战，白起用避实击虚、先弱后强的战法，全歼韩、魏联军24万，因功晋升国尉。次年，再升大良造。此后30余载，屡战获胜，攻取70余城。三十六年，率军数万深入楚地，大破楚军，受封武安君。四十二年，赵、魏联军攻韩华阳（今河南新郑北），白起与客卿胡阳率军救韩，大败联军。斩魏兵13万，将赵军2 万驱入河中淹死。五十五年，秦、赵长平之战，白起针对赵军统帅赵括骄躁轻敌、缺乏实战经验的弱点，予以分割包围，待其饥疲交迫，一举歼灭，史传他坑杀降卒40万。后因触怒昭王，贬之士伍，五十八年十二月被迫自杀。白起戎马一生，勇谋兼备，长于野战进攻，料敌用兵，战必求歼，为秦国统一大业立下功勋。后世多称赞其巧妙用兵，而讥评其杀戮无度。
