沸石分子筛具有晶体的结构和特征,表面为固体骨架,内部的孔穴可起到吸附分子的作用。孔穴之间有孔道相互连接,分子由孔道经过。由于孔穴的结晶性质,分子筛的孔径分布非常均一。分子筛依据其晶体内部孔穴的大小对分子进行选择性吸附,也就是吸附一定大小的分子而排斥较大物质的分子,因而被形象地称为"分子筛"。

沸石分子筛按其孔或通道体系可分为小孔,中孔和双孔沸石三个组别.

小孔沸石的孔口属八元环体系,其最大的自由直径为0.43nm.包括林德a(linde a),毛沸石(erionite),菱沸石(chabazite),zk-5,zk-4,zk-21,zk-22等等

中孔沸石属十元环体系,其通道开口居于较小的八元环和较大的十二元环之间,最大的自由直径为0.63nm.主要包括浊沸石(laumontite),zsm-5,zsm-12,zsm-23,zsm-48,zsm-11等等

双孔主要是具有两组孔结构,即有十二元和八元环孔口或十元和八元孔口的交联通道.包括丝光沸石,菱钾沸石(offretite),林德t,纳菱沸石(gmelnite),片沸石(heulandite),或斜法费石(clinoptilolite),镁碱沸石(ferrierite),zsm-35,zsm-38,辉沸石(stilbite),环晶石(dachiardite),柱沸石(epistilbite)等等
