新四军在苏南珥陵为支援国民党军而对日军的袭击战。1938年8月23日,国民党第79军进入江苏省武进、丹阳之线。同日,金坛日军约200人,并有轻重机枪6挺,炮2门,乘小火轮沿金丹河向北进犯。新四军第1支队第2团第3营为掩护友军作战,在日军迫近丹阳县之珥陵时,即向日军进击。第7连为突击队,首先在东方桥东侧河边展开;第9连配合地方游击队百余人,对丹阳方向实施警戒并担任掩护。日军登陆后抢占高处,依托堤埂进行顽抗。新四军利用稻田禾苗作隐蔽连续冲锋,经5小时激战,击毙日军军官3人、士兵29人,击伤日军军官2人、士兵15人,活捉日军1人。
