处于外磁场H中的硬超导体，当磁场逐渐从Hc2减小到零时，由于钉扎作用，一部分正向涡旋线未退出样品，有磁滞现象。磁场由H=0再反方向逐渐增大到Hc1，反向涡旋线开始进入样品。相邻的正向和反向涡旋线间相互吸引，若两者或其中之一脱离钉扎吸引到一起就相互抵消，这二根磁通线消失，称磁通湮灭。这情况也出现在不同数量的正、反涡旋线间，在磁化曲线的Hc1附近就有异常，已为实验所证实。磁通湮灭时磁能以热的形式释放出来，使样品局部升温而导致钉扎效应降低，进一步也会导致磁通蠕动。
