利用永久磁铁产生磁场的小型交流发电机，是汽油机点火系统中的点火电源。磁电机点火系统由开关、点火线圈、断电器、电容器、分电器和安全放电装置等组成，它产生高压电并分配给各气缸的火花塞。磁电机大多采用旋转磁铁式结构，按总体设计可分为单体式和飞轮式。单体式是将上述各部件做成一个整体，安装在内燃机上；飞轮式是将磁铁安装在内燃机飞轮上，其他各部件分别安装在内燃机上，大多用于单缸机。磁电机断电器大多采用机械触点式的，也可用晶体管式的。有些磁电机还装有一些附加的部件。①起动加速器：装在单体式磁电机上，起动时使磁电机在曲轴上止点附近时的角速度加大，以提高电压，保证发火。②离心式点火提前角调节装置：装在单体式磁电机上，可随转速升高而加大点火提前角。③有些磁电机附有单独线圈，作为照明供电之用。
