区域管理学派是区域经济融入管理学的内容后形成的新的学派，对于区域经济学从理论到应用起着一个桥梁的作用。区域管理起源于人们对20世纪50－60年代区域发展和区域问题的认识，由于落后地区和发达地区的对立，人口大量从落后地区流向发达地区，而发达地区的产业部门却很难向落后地区转移，产业结构受到阻碍，要解决这一问题，人们认识到，仅有政策和规划是不够的，还必须借助管理学的方式，把地域作为对象进行管理。如日本的国土开发、美国的区域再开发等，都是著名的范例。
