产业经济学是现在经济学中用来分析实现经济问题的新兴的相对独立的应用经济理论。产业经济学是介于微观经济学和宏观经济学之间的%26ldquo;中观经济学%26rdquo;，它以产业（industry）为研究对象，主要研究产业组织、产业发展、产业结构、产业布局及产业政策等，研究和探索个别产业内企业间的竞争、合作关系及其对经济绩效的影响和相应的公共政策，同时也研究产业间不同产业之间的结构关系和经济技术关联及相应的产业政策。由于产业经济学以%26ldquo;产业%26rdquo;作为研究的焦点，所以产业经济学也就成了为制定国家经济发展战略服务、为制定以推动经济发展为目标的产业政策服务的经济理论，也即为制定产业政策提供经济理论依据。
通常认为，产业经济学的重要组成部分产业组织理论是微观经济学的应用。产业经济学组成内容中与宏观经济学较接近的是产业结构理论。
