金伯利大洞是一个著名的旅游胜地，它占地17公顷，方圆1.6公里。约有2200多万吨土被从这里挖走，出产了14504566克拉钻石（约等于2722公斤），直到1914年，这里的石头被完全挖光。当时，这一露天矿已有215米深，采矿隧道更深达1100米。目前，渗水和雨水已淹没了该洞的一半。
地质学家们还发现了其他一些含有钻石的金伯利岩矿管，而且今天在金伯利周围和南非的其他地区还有许多大洞。南非是当今世界的第五大钻石生产国。
