| 星云 nebula 银河系内太阳系以外一切非恒星状的气体尘埃云。18世纪后期，F.W.赫歇尔等天文学家在天空中发现了许多云雾状天体，他们称之为星云。19世纪和20世纪，天文学家利用大望远镜和照相方法，又观测到许多星云，并发现其中绝大多数位于银河系之外，是跟银河系类似的庞大恒星系统。仅一小部分位于银河系内，它们是由气体和尘埃组成的云。因此，在F.W.赫歇尔的时代，天文学家所认识的星云实际上是混杂着两类性质截然不同的天体。银河系以外的星云称为河外星系环状星云（M57）或星系；银河系以内的星云称为银河星云，或简称星云。按照形状、大小和物理性质，银河星云分为行星状星云和弥漫星云，弥漫星云分为亮星云和暗星云，亮星云又分为发射星云和反射星云。此外，超新星遗迹和球状体也可归入银河星云。
