古建筑木结构的木构件，在适宜的温湿度条件下会受各种有害菌类和蛀虫的侵蚀,发生糟朽或霉烂,危害着古建筑的安全。气候干燥地区的古建筑,维修建造时,在墙壁内有木柱的部位,应在墙外皮柱根处砌留通风口,以免砌入墙内的木柱因潮湿而滋生菌虫。同时在木柱上涂刷防腐剂可防潮。潮湿多雨地区的古建筑的木构件，易被白蚁、木蜂蛀蚀，或残损，或朽烂，或中空。防治白蚁的方法，以化学药剂毒杀法应用最广，华中华南地区，多用亚砒酸、水杨酸、升汞等配剂，有效期较长，效力也较大。在华东地区，还用1/200的氯丹乳剂或2/100的氯丹油剂进行喷涂处理，有效期可达20年。市场上出售的"灭蚁灵"效力也较好。福建等地还用"CCA"水溶性药剂进行喷涂，有效期达 20～30 年。氯丹和"CCA"药剂除在木构件上直接喷涂产生效力外，还可用毒土法，即在建筑物四周挖 1米深 0.5米宽的沟，将药拌和在土壤内再回填好，可防止外来白蚁的侵蚀。此外还有土坑诱杀法、灯光诱杀法、挖巢法等。南方每年春夏之季，还有一种木蜂危害古建筑的椽子和门窗槛框，每只木蜂像一个钻头，2～3分钟内即可蛀咬出一个直径约 5毫米、深达 2～3厘米的洞。防治的办法，是用棉球蘸着5％的氯丹油剂堵塞洞眼，即可杀死木蜂，然后再在木构件上喷涂1％的氯丹油剂。
