中国植物遗传育种学家。1916年5月8日生于浙江省宁波市。1939年毕业于中央大学农艺系，同年到成都四川省农业改进所工作。1947年赴美，1950年获加利福尼亚理工学院博士学位。回国后任中国农业科学院多倍体育种研究室主任、作物育种栽培研究所副所长。中国科学院学部委员。1979年被授予全国劳动模范称号。长期从事禾谷类多倍体遗传育种研究。主持的人工异源八倍体小黑麦育种研究，基本上解决了结实率和种子饱满度问题，并首次选育出一批抗逆性强、蛋白质含量高、发酵品质好的八倍体小黑麦品种，获1978年全国科学大会奖。还主持了同源四倍体水稻育种研究。撰有《禾谷类作物的多倍体育种方法的研究》(1960～1963)、《八倍体小黑麦的培育和试种》(1975)等论文40多篇。
