The swath profile method uses four statistical parameters including maximum,minimum,average and standard deviation to describe the topographical feature in a certain area quantitatively,and turns the description of the hypsography characteristic of topography in line into the description of topography in a certain area by the topographical profile graph.

地形剖面图指沿地表某一直线方向上的垂直剖面图，以显示剖面线上断面地势起伏状况。
地形剖面图是在等高线地形图的基础上绘制的。它在平整土地、修筑渠道、建筑铁路、公路和其他工程时，可作为计算土石方量的依据。地形剖面图有水平比例尺和垂直比例尺。
由于地球表面是一个球面，而地图是一个平面，当把球面展成平面时，必然发生破裂和褶皱，这样就不能表示各种地面景物的形状、大小和相互关系。为了解决球面和平面之间的矛盾，采用了地图投影的方法。因为有了在平面上投影的经纬网，就能根据地理坐标把球面上的景物，转绘在平面上构成地图。在地图投影的过程中，不论采用什么方法，都会使经纬网发生变形。地图投影按其变形性质可分为：等角投影、等积投影和任意投影。按其投影的构成方法可分为方位投影、圆锥投影和圆柱投影等。按投影面的位置可分为正轴投影、横轴投影和斜轴投影等。
