鳞翅目的1科。翅具鲜明大斑,幼虫潜食的小型蛾类。本科昆虫通称细蛾。已知约1000种，广布世界各地。一般呈灰或褐色，有银白、金黄等金属光泽斑；无单眼和眼罩；触角与翅等长或比翅长些；下唇须向前或向上弯曲。前翅细长，中室占翅长的2/3～3/4；后翅呈矛头状，无中室。成虫在傍晚飞行，有趋光性。静止时用前、中足将身体前部撑起，翅倾斜呈屋脊状，翅端贴近物体表面，形如坐势。
幼龄幼虫头扁，侧生单眼小，数目多少不一，有时减成1对,胸足和腹足经常退化，一般第6节上无腹足,趾钩为单序或双序，横带或缺环。老熟幼虫圆筒形。一般为潜叶性，有的潜茎或果实、种子，也有做虫瘿的。常见为害果树的种类有：爻纹细蛾为害荔枝、龙眼，分布在华南地区;金纹细蛾为害苹果、梨、桃、樱、李等,分布在华北一带；为害茶树的有茶细蛾；为害树木的有柳细蛾（见图）等。
