玄武岩 basalt 基性喷出岩的一种。成分相当于辉长岩。灰黑色。常具气孔状、杏仁状构造和斑状结构。斑晶为橄榄石、辉石、基性长石等;基质一般为细粒或隐晶质。按次要矿物的不同,可划分为橄榄玄武岩、紫苏辉石玄武岩等;按结构构造,可分为气孔状玄武岩、杏仁状玄武岩等;按化学成分和矿物成分,可分为高铝玄武岩、碱性玄武岩和拉斑玄武岩等。由于玄武岩浆粘度小,流动性大,喷溢地表易形成大规模熔岩流和熔岩被,但也有呈层状侵入体的,如岩床等。在高原地区常形成面积达数千至数十万平方千米的熔岩台地,有人称其为高原玄武岩,如印度的德干高原玄武岩。在海洋则构成海岭和火山岛。与之有关的矿产有铜、钴、硫黄、冰洲石、宝石等,其本身亦可作耐酸铸石原料。
