藏北羌塘高原北部内陆湖泊， 咸水湖。 位于北纬35°55′，东经86°58′，昆仑山脉中段木孜塔格雪山(海拔6973米)南麓，是受东西向断裂控制的构造湖。湖面海拔4784米，面积42平方公里，由于受邻近高山冰雪融水及地下水补给影响,湖水矿化度不高，为22.7克/升，pH值7.3，总硬度143.1毫克当量/升,化学类型属硫酸镁亚型。湖滨有一级砂砾堤，高出湖面1.5米,北岸一级湖相阶地高出湖面5～10米。湖北8公里处的强巴欠火山群为羌塘高原第四纪火山活动带之一，有辉石安山岩组成的方山和面积广达数十平方公里的波状熔岩平原以及熔岩流壅塞而成的许多封闭的碟形洼地与小湖泊群等火山地貌。湖区气候寒冷干燥，罕无人迹，由青藏苔草与垫状驼绒藜组成的高寒荒漠草原更显荒凉，有较多的野驴、藏羚与野牦牛等珍稀野生动物栖居。
