对会计本质的一种认识，认为会计是一种记录、分类和总结一个企业的交易并报告其结果的艺术。在20世纪70年代前的相当长一段时期内，这种观点在西方国家比较浒。美国注册会计师协会所属的名词委员会于1953年发表的第一号“会计名词以报”，对会计所下的定义是：“会计是一种艺术，旨在将具有或至少部分具有财务特征的交易事项，以有意义的方式且以货币来表示，予以记录、分类和汇总并解释由此产生的结果”。该公报还对上述定义中涉及的“艺术”一词作了解释：“艺术有一部分是科学。但艺术还包括加到强调的是会计人员运用其知识，以解决特定问题的那种创造性的技巧能力。”在这个意义上才说会计是一种艺术。
