人机界面(HCI)设计涉及到计算机科学的很多领域。在过去传统的应用软件系统设计中，人机界面变得愈来愈重要，以致评价一个系统更多的取决于其人机界面而不是它的功能。多年来，人机通信一直局限于文本方式，这严重限制了人本来所具有的通信技能，大大降低了通信效率。近年来多媒体技术的出现从技术上为在人机交互中全面采用人本身具有的通信技能提供了可能性,为建造高效友好的人机界面带来希望。但多媒体信息、多模式通信的复杂性也对人机交互、人机界面设计提出许多新的挑战性的课题。其设计不仅要考虑到用户及任务本身，更多地是要考虑和规划信息空间结构、媒体的时间基，即不是如何提供多媒体信息，而是在什么情况下采什么样媒体及其集成，以提供最优组合交互处理手段，并优化显示质量。因此，人机界面设计不仅借助计算机技术，还要依托于心理学，认知科学，语言学、通信技术及戏剧、音乐、美术多方面的理论和方法。
