   一种富铁矿物的沉积岩。主要由赤铁矿、针铁矿、菱铁矿、磁铁矿、铁质绿泥石、黄铁矿等铁矿物和粘土、硅质、砂质等杂质组成。多呈黑色或灰色,具鲕状、豆状、肾状和结核状结构。按矿物成分可分为硫化铁质岩(主要矿物为黄铁矿、白铁矿等)、碳酸铁质岩(主要矿物为菱铁矿等)、氧化铁质岩(主要矿物为赤铁矿、褐铁矿等)和硅酸铁质岩(主要矿物为鲕绿泥石等)。铁含量达工业品位,且具一定储量规模,则构成铁矿床。中国铁质岩矿床形成于各个地质时期,如前寒武纪的鞍山式铁矿,古生代的宁乡式铁矿、山西式铁矿,中生代的淮南式铁矿等。
