对pn结施加的反向偏压增大到某一数值VBR时，反向电流密度突然开始迅速增大的现象称为pn结击穿。发生击穿时的反向电压称为pn结的击穿电压。
击穿电压与半导体材料的性质、杂质浓度及工艺过程等因素有关。pn结的击穿从机理上可分为雪崩击穿、隧道击穿和热电击穿三类。前两者一般不是破坏性的，如果立即降低反向电压，pn结的性能可以恢复；如果不立即降低电压，pn结就遭到破坏。pn结上施加反向电压时，如没有良好散热条件，将使结的温度上升，反向电流进一步增大，如此反复循环，最后使pn结发生击穿。由于热不稳定性引起的击穿，称为热电击穿，此类击穿是永久破坏性的。pn结击穿是pn结的一个重要电学性质，击穿电压限制了pn结的工作电压，所以半导体器件对击穿电压都有一定的要求。但利用击穿现象可制造稳压二极管、雪崩二极管和隧道二极管等多种器件。
