广州图书馆是广州市政府主办的公益性文化设施，是一座集学习阅读、信息交流、展览讲座等综合文化功能和数字化网络服务为一体的现代化、大型、综合性公共图书馆。
广州图书馆于1982年1月2日开馆，坐落在中山四路42号，交通便利，环境优雅。馆舍建筑面积17700平方米，阅览座位1400多个。每周开放72小时，节假日照常开放。设13个阅览室、6个外借处和联合图书馆、分馆、流通站、汽车图书馆等57个馆外社区服务点，在全国较早建立了盲人电子阅览室。现有藏书50多万种230多万册（件），其中四分之三对外开放。形成了广州地方文献、港台文献、艺术设计资料、音像资料等资源特色。
提供书刊外借、阅览、信息检索咨询、网络浏览、远程教育、图书设备销售等服务项目。积极参与社会文化活动，经常举办内容丰富、题材广泛的展览、讲座和读书咨询活动。2000年以来每年接待读者230多万人次以上，文献流通700多万册次以上。
广州图书馆网站于2000年开通。馆内局域网集成了电子图书、期刊论文、报纸文章、标准、专利、法律法规、商贸等电子资源和数据库一批，自建了广州人物、地方法规规章等特色资源库。建设和维护全国文化信息资源共享工程广州市分中心“广州数字文化网”。自行研发了小型图书馆自动化管理系统和新型图书监测仪，在本地区拥有众多用户。
积极开展对外文化交流，参与举办“中法文化年”活动，与法国里昂、日本福冈等广州友好城市图书馆开展图书交换和馆员交流，与香港歌德学院定期开展学术交流活动。
