在古希腊神话传说中，有一位叫卡力斯托的少女，她美丽动人，而且心地善良。作为月亮女神阿尔忒弥斯的一个侍女，卡力斯托总是善待每一个伙伴，时时让人们感受到她发自内心的关怀。因此，月亮女神和其他的侍女都很喜欢她，大家在一起过着无忧无虑的幸福时光。
遗憾的是，卡利斯托这种幸福的生活被宙斯毁掉了。趁着卡力斯托没有防备，宙斯用卑劣的手段占有了卡力斯托。更不幸的是不久之后，卡力斯托发觉自己怀孕了。月亮女神一怒之下，将卡力斯托赶出了月宫。无依无靠的卡力斯托只得来到山林间，搭建了一间草房度日。后来，她生下了一个男孩，并给他取名叫阿卡斯。宙斯的妻子赫拉得知这件事情后，简直要气疯了。她找到山林间，将美貌的卡力斯托变成了一只大熊，并且企图杀掉这只大熊。宙斯不忍心卡力斯托死去，出手相救，将卡力斯托带到了天上，让她成为北天最耀眼的大熊星座，算是对卡力斯托的补偿。
