诺敏自然保护区位于内蒙古鄂伦春自治旗西南、大兴安岭东坡中段的北缘，总面积148 770公顷，属大兴安岭中山山地，地势南高北低，山脊海拔在500～1300米之间，相对高度在200～400米左右，最高峰1322米。
保护区的北界河诺敏河在保护区内形成密集的河流网，其支流东、西斯木科河和牛日坑河为区内较大的河流。
保护区内植物主要属达乌里亚区系，植物群落以森林为主，森林覆盖率达74.2%，是大兴安岭主要的原始林景观区之一。林下以杜鹃、榛子、胡枝子、蔷薇、绣线菊、刺梅果、珍珠梅、悬钩子、柳条为主，地被植物则以越桔、杜香、沙草、山黧豆、沙参、地榆、柳叶菜为主。林型主要有落叶松——草类林、落叶松——杜鹃林、落叶松——柞树林、落叶松——溪旁林等。
本区内有国家保护的珍贵动物驼鹿、马鹿、猞猁、貂熊、丹顶鹤、鸳鸯、水獭、紫貂、麝等，约占全国保护动物种类的20%左右。此外，大兴安岭主要动物种类在本区也有分布。
