光的电矢量末端在垂直于传播方向的平面上描绘的轨迹为一圆的偏振光，在椭圆偏振光图1的装置中,如果入射平面偏振光的振动平面跟晶体表面的光轴方向所成的角度θ＝45°，于是在晶体内 o光和 e光有相等的振幅；当它们在晶体产生的位相差为π/2的奇数倍时,则所得合成轨迹呈圆形。
